REFERENCE STREAM

Reference streams for testing reception, decoding and delivery. Every value is known: bars, PLUGE, grey steps and skin patches carry exact Y′CbCr codes for the declared matrix, range and bit depth; a sync scale with a blip on every whole second shows audio/video offset frame by frame; a clock, timecode and machine-readable data strip identify every frame. Each stream comes with a certificate listing the expected values, and is verified before publication.

How to read it

AV sync

The yellow pointer crosses zero exactly when the blip sounds. Read where the pointer is when you hear it: green is within EBU R37 (−60/+40 ms), yellow within ITU-R BT.1359, red is out of tolerance. One tick is one frame.

Channels

Each second the blip moves to the next channel (L, R, …) and its box lights up: wrong routing or a delayed channel is heard and seen at once.

Frame ladder and hand

One box per frame and a hand turning once a second. Dropped, repeated or out-of-cadence frames break the sequence; the circle must stay round (aspect ratio).

Levels and colour

75% bars, PLUGE −2/0/+2/+4%, grey steps and ColorChecker skin patches with exact codes. Compare with the certificate; −2% is truly below black in the signal.

Resolution

Vertical and horizontal gratings from 1.00 to 0.25 of Nyquist, drawn in real pixels: they show the effective resolution of each ABR rung and any scaling.

Data strip

64 cells: sync pattern, frame number, milliseconds of the day and parity. Read by the WorldTV DVB-I analyser for automatic measurement.
